Our Amateur Bodybuilder of the Week was...
Rev. Dr. Bruce W. Jackson
How Did You Get Started?
I always wanted to try my hand at bodybuilding, dabbling in it here and
there over the years. I was a competitive swimmer and that consumed most
of my time through college. I competed in a few triathlons before getting
married, but eventually settled into a sedentary lifestyle. When I hit 39,
I decided that I was getting too soft. I started lifting at the local
YMCA, but the weight room was less than ideal. I finally was able to join
a more hardcore gym after about two years at the YMCA. I hooked up with a
nationally ranked natural bodybuilder who has advised me as a friend and
who I now receive training from once a week. I competed for the first time
in May of 99 and was hooked. What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
Currently I train four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday). I
don't have a set day for each bodypart, but try to mix and match to keep
the body in a state of constant flux. For instance, one Monday, I may do
chest and arms and then not do chest until the Tuesday of the following
week. My typical splits are: Chest, Back, Legs, Shoulders and Arms,
though I also do Back/Biceps, Chest Triceps, Legs, Shoulders and either bis
or tris. Abs are thrown in 2-3 times a week. I only do cardio when
dieting for a contest.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
I would have to say that it's a combination of whey protein and eating 6
smaller meals a day. Given the fact that I started bodybuilding in my late
thirties, this has helped me the most. Also using EFA's has helped to
lower my cholesterol--in a a family with a history of high cholesterol. Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I like the challenge of seeing my body shape change and meet my mental
image of what I could become. I have always been quite disciplined and the
fact that I only have to spend 5 hours a week in the gym fits my busy
schedule as an Assistant Dean at a theological seminary. I also like the
comraderie of the gym.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
I would like to gain overall size (10 pounds at least), especially in the
upper body. I also will continue to compete on the masters level and open
lightweight class. I enjoy competing --even the dieting! What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Have fun and enjoy what you are doing. Mix things up when you feel stale.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Joe Sumrell (NABF National champion); Flex Wheeler; Dave Draper; Frank Zane. Check out another pic Pic #3
