How Did You Get Started?

In the summer of 2008 my daughter, Kaitilin, and son, McKale set up a lemonade stand in front of our home. They enthusiastically waved down cars to sell them a cool refreshment. During the course of their sales a man stopped and bought a glass of lemonade and began speaking with me about a case study that involved incorporating weight training with cardio. All of my adult life I stayed in shape by using workout videos and simple hand weights. The new study would put me in the gym using heavy weights and cardio equipment that I had never used before.

After just six weeks I made significant improvements to my muscle tone and dropped my body fat from 18% to 13%! Soon I was being asked by my friends to compete in figure competitions. I began training for my first competition on January 1st 2009. That is how it started; there is no telling how it will end. By the way the kids made almost $100 in lemonade sales. True story!

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

Why Do You Love Fitness?

When my husband was a boy his mom would tell him, "Son, if you want nice things you must take care of what you have." Our body is our most personal possession. If we want nice things we must take care of what we have. I believe that our body is a reflection of how we care for the rest of our life. Material things are said not to matter.

True, but if you just have to have things, why not take care of them. Personally, training gives me a since of accomplishment and pride. To be dedicated to something makes me feel like my own person. I have to train for it! It is like a new sports car straight off the show-room floor.

You don't leave it the way you got it. No! You change the tailpipes, the headlights, tint the windows, put the supercharged V-8 engine in it, you supe it up! I change myself to fit the way that I want to be...I supe it up... not settle for the way it came!

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

I thought for awhile before answering this one because of how I feel about the subject. I decided to be honest with myself and you as I answered:

Have you been through Wal-Mart? Look around yourself anywhere in public. The majority of people are tremendously overweight. That may sound like a harsh statement but most true statements are! I say it harshly to keep myself away from it.

I don't want to be the majority. The health concerns and self esteem issues are staggering. I want to live a healthy life. It's not easy. It takes commitment, will power and dedication.

But it makes you feel so good about yourself. And it can be done. I have seen people that are walking the fence of harmful diseases who begin a exercise program and a healthy diet, after time.

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

I was raised in a home where keeping fit and eating healthy was a priority. My mom and dad both instructed aerobics and white fishes and asparagus was a regular meal when I was growing up. I do not want to let the influence of my upbringing to stop with me. Instead I prefer to take what I was thought as a child and pass it down so that my children so they can live a healthy lifestyle as well. I guess what I mean to say is that most of our children's development comes from home. The most important thing that makes me want to achieve my goals is influencing my family to be fit and eat healthy.

What Are Your Future Fitness Plans?

I am studying now to get my credentials for personal training and nutrition. This fall I plan to enroll at a university to receive a degree in a fitness related field. I would like to eventually train others for figure competitions in my own gym. I am training and competing now to earn a national qualification in the NPC figure division. Beyond that, it is a mystery.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Fitness Competitors?

Do it for yourself- Surround yourself with the ones that love you, they will encourage you. They will understand that you are dedicated even if they are not sure why. You are the only one that truly knows why, so do it for yourself!

Compete only against yourself- My first competition I walked into the hallway where all of the other competitors were waiting to check-in. I compared myself to them and found flaws in myself where others were perfect. Point is that we are all our own worst critic. If we compare ourselves to everyone else we can't focus. Be proud of yourself, the ones that truly love you are proud already.

And DON'T be hard on yourself- Learn to graciously accept the compliments that others give you. As long as you are training you will receive them. Be confident, but be humble.

What Features Do You Use On Bodybuilding.com?

The whole SuperSite! With articles on training, nutrition, supplements, diet plans, exercise pictures...and on...and on...and on, there is really no excuse not to be the best you can be!

Positive feed back to me is crucial. Whenever you work hard in the gym you eventually begin to notice results. But because we quickly become accustomed to seeing how we look in the mirror, we forget how far we have come. I was raised to be a humble person, to accept complements graciously. But when someone views an image and has kind words to say it pushes me to work harder and lets me know that I am making progress.

I truly treasure kind and respectful comments. When I feel discouraged I can go back and reread them, sometimes that is just what I need to get re-motivated.
