How Did You Get Started?

I started learning about nutrition, endurance training, and weight lifting when I was 15 years old. I was involved in many different indoor and outdoor sports growing up such as gymnastics, cheerleading, soccer, track and field, kickboxing, volleyball, hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and snowboarding. Plus, I have three brothers so I was somewhat of a tom boy.

But ultimately, my mom has been the most influential person because she stressed the importance of a healthy lifestyle. It was more than just talking about health; it was living up to what she said. She worked out and lifted weight consistently and was able to independently study for and receive her personal trainer license.

Her ability to be a role model is what attracted me to this sport and helped me understand those things that define me as a person. I started reading all of her Muscle and Fitness Magazine's, Flex Magazine's, Nutrition and Sports Training books... and began asking a lot of questions about my own workout routines.

I remember looking at pictures and reading articles from Cory Everson, Rachael McLeish, Amy Fadhli, and Monica Brant. I admired the dedication, beauty, grace, and femininity they represented. So, when I was a senior in high school I decided to begin training for the MID USA's Bodybuilding and Fitness show (the figure division wasn't around yet) in Albuquerque, New Mexico presented by Jeff Taylor. My parents were very supportive of my goals and sponsored my first show. I learned a lot about myself and what I was capable of doing when I applied that much focus on one thing and I have been hooked ever since.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I use a combination plan that combines weight training and cardio to insure that I continually progress. I weight train 5 days a week and do cardio 6 days a week. I incorporate 2 days of plyometric/interval training to trim my legs and tighten my glutes. During contest prep, "two-a-days" begin and I add 30-45 minutes of cardio in the evening to each training session.

arrow Sample Training Week:

Monday: 5am - 45 minute Intervals / Shoulders and Chest
Tuesday: 5am - 1 hour Cardio / Lower Body Burn
Wednesday: 5am - 45 minute Intervals / Training with Carla
Thursday: 5am - 1 hour Cardio / Back and Glutes
Friday: 5am - 1 hour Cardio / Biceps and Triceps
Saturday: 7am - 9am Stadium Stairs @ Red Rocks w/ Carla and the Performance Ready Team
    Sunday - Rest

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

My nutrition plan is based on what my body tells me I need to make me feel healthy with the schedule I keep. I eat based on what my body needs as a whole. My body responds well to lean sources of protein, low fat, and low carbohydrate diet. I eat 6 meals a day, between 250-300 calories per meal, and I eat green vegetables with 5 meals. I stay away from high starch carbs, refined sugar, and dairy products.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

Because of the intense training and nutritional program I use a number of supplements to replenish my muscles and cells. For sports endurance and recovery I use BCAA's, ALA, CLA, Whey Protein, Emergen-C packs, Essential Fatty Acids, Glutamine, L-Tyrosine, Creatine and Arginine.

Why Do You Love Fitness?

I appreciate and model my activities in life around health and fitness because it is a part of who I am as an individual and as a woman. This is a lifestyle for me... it makes me feel confident, attractive, and energized. My goal is to share my experiences and influence the people that come into my life so that they can experience similar feelings through focusing on their health and style of living.

What Are Your Future Fitness Plans?

My future fitness plan is to grow to a higher level of achievement year after year. While I won't be competing my entire life, I think it is critical that I maintain a healthy lifestyle and share what I've learned with others.

2006 Plan of Action

  • Compete in 1-2 National Figure Competitions.
  • Launch my website: www.brandynewman.com.
  • Identify and actively seek out endorsements and sponsorships opportunity.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Fitness Competitors?

I think many women would agree with me when I say, "Eliminate as many distractions as possible." Stay away from the peanut butter jar ladies... hahaha!!! I would also tell everyone that the competition is really you challenging yourself to become better, not beating someone else on the stage. I would hope that everyone could focus on their own personal achievement and be able to walk away saying "I did the best I could and know what I need to work on" rather than "I lost."

Who Are Your Favorite Fitness Competitors/Bodybuilders?

It's hard to name just one person because I admire so many in the industry and for different reasons. I applaud Carla Sanchez, Christine Pomponio-Pate, Monica Brant, Elaine Goodlad, Timea Majerova, Valerie Waugaman and all the ladies of the Performance Ready Team. Oh, and I can't forget Mr. Frank Sepe and ARNOLD!!
