How Did You Get Started?

Several years ago, a less than thrilling summer internship combined with stumbling upon Bodybuilding.com led me down a road that I never would have predicted. I come from somewhat of a health-conscious family, so in a search for my own workout routine to follow I came across the natural bodybuilders like Layne Norton and his series on Bodybuilding.com as well as others.

I never really knew such an option existed, but for some reason it instantly clicked with me. I went home that day and told my parents that I was going to be a bodybuilder. Thanks to the promotion Scivation was running at the time, I was able to receive free consultation from Derek Charlebois, again another of the inspiring natural bodybuilders I found on this site.

Eventually I decided to take it all the way and enter a competition held at my university. I did not end up winning that show, but I learned a great deal with Derek's help and just by going through the contest prep process. I wanted to take a minimum of 2 years off to make further progress and changes in my body and actually ended up starting my most recent prep nearly 2 years to the day after my first competition. With the help of Tommy Jeffers, someone I originally came across in the Layne Norton Inside The Life Of A Natural Pro series of videos, I dieted for over 20 weeks and ended up winning the Open Medium Tall class at the INBA Naturals Nationals.

Day 5: Back Thickness/Traps/Rear Delts

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

I don't follow a set plan everyday per se, more just a combination of hitting certain macronutrient goals per day and using certain foods to hit those goals. At the end of my prep, for instance, I had normal days where I would hit macros of 286g protein, 136g carbs, and 54g fat. I also incorporated very controlled refeeds every 5 days where protein would be lowered and carbs and fat would be raised a bit.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

Bodybuilding shows me that I am capable of far more than I sometimes give myself credit for. It is demonstrative of the spirit of believing and achieving. Though prep can be an exceedingly difficult experience, I get a tremendous sense of pride from the fact that I can combat the lethargy, hunger, and emotional stresses from prep and achieve what some would love to do but very few are willing.

Bodybuilding also provides a lot of perspective on life for me; when the cardio gets tough or dieting is really taking its toll, I snap out of it to realize that if these are my worst problems then I am immensely fortunate. If the worst thing in my life is that I'm hungry after eating a meal while others are dealing with real problems elsewhere, I am reminded how blessed I am to be able to pursue an activity that I love.

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

My motivation is purely internal. Maybe it's selfish, but I only participate in bodybuilding for myself rather than trying to impress anyone else or for anyone else's benefit. I love seeing what I am able to achieve through my own dedication and persistence.

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

I'm motivated by seeing progress over time and knowing that I can achieve and surpass my goals purely through putting in hard work.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I again plan to take a very long offseason so that I can make visible improvements the next time I step on stage. Hopefully in the years to come I build a physique worthy of natural pro status.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Be patient. We are inundated with magazine ads of put an inch on your arms with this one workout and other nonsensical promises, but the reality is that it takes consistency over a long period of time to see the desired results of this sport.

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

Tommy Jeffers, Doug Miller, Philip Ricardo Jr., Dorian Yates, Ronnie Coleman, and Phil Heath.
