Our Over 40 Bodybuilder of the Week was...
Carolyne Solari
How Did You Get Started?
I started when I was an 18 year old, overweight college student in The Netherlands. I hired a trainer and noticed great results. After moving to the US, I competed in my first bodybuilding competition in Seaside, CA in 1989, placing 4th. That was a great introduction to intense competition prep.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
Monday-Saturday I perform 30 minutes of cardio at 6am in the morning on an empty stomach, a great way to start my day. Sunday's my 'bunny slipper' day. I perform my ab routine 3 times a week.

Due to many food allergies, I am very limited in what I can consume, my diet is gluten free as well as dairy free. I am highly allergic to shell fish, fruits and most nuts/seeds. I follow a keto diet when in competition prep.
Every morning between 5-5:30am, I drink ice cold green tea with 1/2 squeezed lemon and take my first supplements including caffeine and tribulus before I do my cardio session.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
As a Personal Trainer I want to be an example for women over 40; there is still so much you can do at any age with a great exercise routine and clean diet. The positive effect a consistent routine has had on my health motivates me to continue as long as I can.
What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?
Remembering surviving a near fatal accident at age 41 is my daily motivation. Six years ago, 27 October 2005, I almost lost my life in a motorcycle accident. I was in a coma for 2 days with a severe brain injury, and had my last rights read, however, 2 weeks later I went home to recover.
I do not remember much, but what really stood out was the fact that my brain specialist, after I asked him when I would be able to work out again, told me I would probably never lift weights again but walking would be fine. I did some research on how I could improve not only my memory, but build my physical strength back. I had to set a goal for myself.
I found Bodybuilding.com and learned about figure/fitness competitions and decided I wanted to compete in figure. I knew it would motivate me physically as well as mentally. To make a long story short, I competed in my first figure competition on the anniversary of my accident. I did not compete to bring home a trophy, the fact I had so many relapses in 8 months I was not even sure I would make it. However, I won Masters, Open and took Overall! I think my perseverance and determination has made me a very strong person.
What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?
I think the above story tells it all.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
I am a proud wife of a Marine, and with his next deployment coming up, my competitive nature has taken the back seat for a while. For now, my focus is having my hubby around. My future plan and motivation is to WOW my husband when he returns.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Hire a coach, someone you meet every week to help you start with a great exercise routine, with your progress, and tweak your diet/exercises if needed. Attend posing seminars; it will help you tremendously with stage presentation.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Rachel McLish inspired me to begin weight training.
