Our Amateur Bodybuilder of the Week was...
Angela Irizarry
How Did You Get Started? My senior year in high school I had a choice to select a Weight Training Class as an elective to fulfill my units for graduation. I have always been physically active because of my years of dancing (tap, jazz, ballet etc). There was always a lifting contest. I enjoyed being one of the strongest in the class which primarily consisted of male jocks. I really enjoyed learning different techniques and seeing my body change. Guys would drool over my quads and calves - wishing they had legs like mine. I continued working out on & off throughout my college years. I have always admired the physiques of female bodybuilders like Michelle Ralabate, Laura Creavalle, Vicki Gates, & so many others. I figured I was already genetically gifted and that I should give competitive bodybuilding a try. With much encouragement & support from my trainer and fiance, I finally decided to compete in 1999. After doing one competition, I have been hooked ever since. What Workout Plan Worked Best For You? I don't believe in using only one workout plan. One thing I have learned is to constantly change the workout plan so the body doesn't adapt. Usually during my offseason when I am trying to increase muscle mass, I do negative for about 6 weeks. Thereafter I will switch to one to two bodyparts per day - using full range of motions. I don't believe in lifting half a**. I use full range of motion and doing 3 sets of 8-10 reps per bodypart. One thing I do differently that I don't see many lifters do is change their stance or width position. For instance when I train legs and do squats I use all three stances - close, medium, & wide to make sure I hit every area of my legs. I use the same principle for calves - inner, straight, and outer. Arms, I curl close, medium, and wide... etc. I train that way all the way up to a show. As I get closer to competition I increase the number of reps - but continue full range of motion and the 3 stances/positions.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains? The Sol Body oral growth hormone stacked with Andro Spray & Xenadrine NRG. The benefits of using these products have included putting on an extra 15 lbs. of LEAN muscle mass within 10 months (which is a lot for a woman), lowered bodyfat percentage, increase in strength, greater energy. Also using Biochem's Ultimate Protein System has helped me keep my protein uptake since I love their BANANA & STRAWBERRY flavors. I actually look forward to drinking a protein shake when I am unable to eat a complete meal. Training heavy puts a lot of strain and aches in my joints - Body Ammo's Joint Connection has helped ease the pain and increase recovery rate. Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I love bodybuilding because its a challenging sport. It's a lifetime learning
experience. You can be bodybuilding for years, but you will always learn
something new about it the longer you do it. I enjoy the attention I
receive. I enjoy being up on stage. I enjoy winning. Most importantly, I
live the part for my health & fitness business.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans? At this time I am preparing for Junior Nationals next year and take it one show at a time. I will be guest posing at the Flex Wheeler Classic Bodybuilding Championships next June in Fresno California. Hopefully, I will be able to get more opportunities to guest pose for other shows. With my dancing abilities and theatrical performances, people love it when I am up on stage. I love being on stage. Many say I'm very energetic, savvy, sexy posing and dancing on stage. With my personal business "Mobile Health & Fitness Connection- (www.mhfconnection.com), I will continue to use bodybuilding as a promotional tool to build up my clientel and help others meet their health & fitness needs. I have to live the part since I offer internet personal training, nutritional guidance, etc. My long term goal is to make it to the pro level - maybe be the first 4"11 Ms. Olympia!! What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Universal tips to bodybuilders & fitness enthusiast - DON'T GIVE UP & take it
one workout at a time. Whether you are trying to build muscle, lose weight
- remember that your body changes from the inside out. Don't rush to get
big, don't rush to lose weight. Changes will come with time and patience.
Most importantly give your body TIME to go through those changes. Before you
know it - your desired physique will come.
