How Did You Get Started?

I was an avid reader of fitness magazines, such as Oxygen, and admired the fit, healthy looking models. One day I just thought to myself, "Why can't I build a physique like that?" It became my focus to train hard and compete in my first fitness competition within a year.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I use a three-day split (legs/shoulders, chest/triceps, back/biceps) and train abs a few times a week. Though I typically follow my trainer's program, I sometimes jump in on friend's workouts to get new ideas and keep my body guessing. I also take gymnastics twice per week, and as my competition nears, I practice my fitness routine 3-5 mornings a week.

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

I eat a LOT of chicken. I've also been nicknamed the 'yolk factory' because I go through egg whites at an amazing rate! Other staples of my diet are oats, protein powders, wild rice, yams and assorted greens (broccoli, asparagus, spinach). I enjoy fruits (kiwi, bananas, berries, mangos) during the off-season. I tend to eat a fairly clean diet year round, with cheat meals as needed (mmm... Sushi!). About six weeks before my competition, I make changes (such as cutting out fruits and dairy) and get more strict about portion sizes and water consumption.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

What would I do without whey protein?! I have at least three tubs on the go at any given time. My recent favorite is Designer Strawberry, but I also like Kaizen's Vanilla or Chocolate. I cycle creatine and HMB, and find glutamine and glucosamine help with my recovery time and flexibility.

Why Do You Love Fitness?

Deciding to compete was a life-altering decision. I was immediately welcomed by the bodybuilding community (locally & online), and continue to be pleasantly surprised by the individuals I meet and the inspirational stories they share. While many outsiders believe bodybuilding is about vanity and how people look on the outside, I've met several cancer survivors, others who've lost large amounts of weight and still more who strive to improve their lives through better health.

We each have our own story about what we overcame to make it to contest day. In my case, my life today is drastically different from one year ago when I made the decision to train for the 2006 NABBA Novice. I am a stronger person inside and out, and I owe great thanks to my family and friends (old & new) for their endless support. I also attribute the healthy focus of training for my first competition as a primary reason I pulled through recent hardships.

Regardless of what else was going on in my life, I felt strong in the gym. In October 2005, I lost a close friend my age to cancer, and learned through that tragedy that I cannot take my health for granted. Now I use her memory as inspiration to continue to push myself to my full potential. I realize I am blessed with good health, and I celebrate that daily!

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

After winning my first attempt at a fitness competition (March 2006), I have decided to continue to the next level and compete again in Fitness Short Class at the 2006 MABBA Provincials this June in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Fitness has become a passion, and will continue to be a huge part of my life.

I strive to learn and improve with each competition. I also look forward to attending the 2006 Canadian National Figure & Fitness Championships this July in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to cheer on my friends and fellow fitness competitors, Carrie, Tina & Lindsay - Good luck, girls! I hope to qualify to compete at the National level for 2007, and my focus until then will be to put on more size.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Fitness Competitors?

Take time to train with and learn from other athletes. The tips and guidance that came from seasoned fitness and figure competitors was invaluable and made me so much more prepared for my first contest. The friendships that are developed by becoming involved in the bodybuilding community are what make this sport so special. Also, compete for your own reasons.

Regardless of how you place on the big day, know that you have given your all and be proud of yourself for that accomplishment! Mostly importantly, though, don't forget to show your appreciation to all the family and friends who supported you along the way. Enjoy spending your off-season with them, livin' a little!

Who Are Your Favorite Fitness Competitors/Bodybuilders?
