How Did You Get Started? I have been training hard for at least 8 years with good results. After seeing figure competitors such as Jenny Lynn, Monica Brandt-Peckham, and Davana Medina I wondered what it would be like to step up to the next level. Competing has been an amazing experience. Seeing the transformation is somewhat surreal. What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
A body part split program focusing on a muscle group per day. Cycling with heavy/light weeks every three weeks and trying to have fun by adding something different each session. My legs and glutes are the last to lean out so I need to really focus on these areas.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
Eating at least five meals per day. Having adequate protein and fat consumption while minimizing carbohydrates beyond 2:00pm. I tend to stay with vegetables such as green beans, asparagus, lettuce, and broccoli. I love peanut butter and consider this my cheat food (this is what happens to you when dieting!). I also avoid sugar and food with a lot of sodium.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Optimum 100% Whey Protein. I couldn't go without it! Opti-women Multivitamin is another I don't go without and a calcium supplement.
Why Do You Love Fitness?
In the beginning it's all about placing in the top five... being the best, but after a competition or two and then an off-season you begin to really learn about your body and yourself. There were times toward the final days approaching a competition when I would break into tears as I looked in the mirror. I just couldn't believe it was me, my body. Not that overweight teenage girl.
It became a very spiritual experience for me in the end. When your body has taken all it can and you feel you just can't go on...you reach inside yourself and pull out whatever you have left to get through another grueling cardio and weight training session. There were times I would pray before getting on the Stairmaster and asked God to get me through it. My glutes ached, the back would get soar, muscles were tight and always seemed to hurt, but you go on. When the season ended I found myself a little depressed. What do I do now? What can I accomplish next?
It took about a month or more to realize the diet, weight training, and cardio didn't need to be a priority. I began to look at what really mattered most...God, my husband, my children and my family. It all became very clear. I had just placed 4th in two of my first competitions, qualified for the nationals and went up against women from all over the United States. I didn't have a trainer or someone to push me each day....I had my faith and myself.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans? I plan to compete this Spring/Summer season and do my very best. What One Tip Would You Give Other Fitness Competitors? Do this for yourself... even if you don't win a trophy... you have won the best prize....you are the prize. Transforming your body into an amazing piece of art work. Just like a sculptor! Who Are Your Favorite Fitness Competitors/Bodybuilders?
Jenny Lynn and Monica Brandt-Peckham.
