Our Amateur Bodybuilder of the Week was...

How Did You Get Started?
I started weight lifting when I participated on the track and field team in college. I was on a scholarship to run the 400-meter dash and I was looking to develop a little more upper body strength to help me have a stronger finish at the end of the race. I would show up several hours before each practice and spend time watching and learning from the others that were training in the gym. By the time I was a junior, I was finally starting to notice some good results with my body. As I started gaining some additional mass on my body, my times on the track started to decrease. The coach informed me that I needed to stop training in the gym and he gave me an ultimatum - stop lifting or lose my scholarship with the track team. That was the last day that I ran in a competitive meet. What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
I wish that I had realized the importance of nutrition and weightlifting when I first started. Of course, there were not as many avenues of media as there are today (such as bodybuilding.com). During contest season I try to stick to the following diet:
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains? Protein is the supplement that has helped me make my biggest gains. I consume 1.5 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight. Of this amount, approximately 70% comes from protein shakes or meal replacements. Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I enjoy bodybuilding because it has given me a chance to help a lot of individuals. I have had the opportunity to assist co-workers, friends and others with their diets, workouts and overall exercise programs. Seeing people not only increase their self-esteem but also their health is something that gives me a lot of satisfaction.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans? My future plans are to compete in a bodybuilding competition in Spring 2004. I really would like to participate in an all-natural event within the next several years. My ultimate dream would be to do some fitness work for a magazine. What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Remember one thing, when you go to a show, most of the bodybuilders on stage will have a defined upper body. But, you will be able to tell the "complete" bodybuilder by the size and definition in their legs. Legs are not the flashy muscle group like the bicep or chest, but it will help you bring home the hardware at the next show you are in.
