Our Over 40 Bodybuilder of the Week was...
Mary Morrison
How Did You Get Started?
Being a mom of 2 very active teenage boys, 15 and 17 I have always stayed in
shape in order to keep up with them and their activities. But after years
of step aerobics and classes and machines I just didn't see the results I
wanted. I decided to try weight lifting. I got started in bodybuilding two
years ago when I met a trainer (Al Yenkevich) at Bally Total fitness who was
training a girl for a bodybuilding competition. I talked to her and Al several times about competing and watched what changes she made to her body
getting ready for her competition. Al kept encouraging me to compete. I
finally made the decision to do it in Feb, of 2005. I began training with
Al. He had the knowledge and skill to train me for my first competition. His knowledge of weight lifting and diet were the biggest influence in my
success at my first competition. I entered the Washington Iron Man and took
3rd in Women's Masters on Oct. 1 2005. Getting up on stage in front of a
1000 or so people was the scariest thing I have ever done. After it was
over I immediately new I wanted to compete again. I now know I can do
anything I put my mind to. What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
I do abs in every workout. And walk most nights with the dog. (when we are
not running.) What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
I eat 5-6 small meals everyday. Five days a week I stick to a strict diet of
complex carbohydrates, high quality proteins, fruits and vegetables. Very
little fats. Two days a week I add whatever I feel like. I work hard in the
gym and reward myself with small amounts of whatever I want. Denying
yourself what you love will only make you fail. So eat a small amount of
what ever it is you love. What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains? High quality whey proteins have been the absolute best thing I ever added to my diet. I love "ON" whey cookies and cream. It taste awesome and mixes easy even in a shaker. I use Redline fat burners before my workout for added energy, and always take a multiple vitamin and flax seed oil. Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I love bodybuilding for the strength and control it gives me in my everyday
life. I know that when I am faced with something difficult that I have the
power and the strength to get through it. I love the challenge to lift more
in every workout. I love the energy I get from my workouts. I try every
day to inspire some one to try to improve there life through exercise and
nutrition. What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
I plan on competing again in April of 2006. I run my own hair salon so the holidays are wild and I need some time before my next competition to add some muscle. I plan to work with my trainer again in Jan. to help me achieve my goals of 1st place in the next competition. What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Stick with it. It is never easy, but it is always worth it. Make it a
priority. Like brushing your teeth. I find an excuse to go to the gym, not to
not go. Give up something like laundry or dishes. They always get done
somehow. :) Hire a trainer. One who knows the sport and can be a great
motivator. Its worth it. Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
I admire all Bodybuilders and Fitness competitors. There is nothing harder
to do then to stay motivated, train and diet for competitions. Any one who
can do it is an amazing positive person.
