Our Over 40 Bodybuilder of the Week was...
Olivia McGuire
How Did You Get Started?
In 2005 I went to a local bodybuilding show as a friend gave me tickets. During the figure open competition I noticed a competitor who had an incredible physique -a show stopper. I asked the show promoter how I could even half as good as her. He suggested I hire on a reputable, experienced personal trainer. I met with a recommended trainer shortly after the show.
I loved her positive energy and enthusiasm and began my new nutrition and training programs immediately. After a few months in, I started to notice some great improvements. My intention wasn't to complete, but only to be in better shape. During my training I kept in touch with the show promoter and he suggested that I compete in an upcoming show to help keep me motivated and "maybe compete".
Even though I was 42 years old at the time, it didn't stop me. I didn't tell anyone except my trainer and daughter that I was competing. I had fears that I might decide not to compete and exit stage left. I didn't know what to expect or how the other competitors would be. It turns out the other competitors were very friendly, supportive and encouraging.
I placed in the top ten in my division. I felt fantastic; I conquered a huge hurdle and challenge. At 42 years of age I was on stage in a bikini and high heels, what a frightening thought it was. From there, competing became a passion and to date I have competed in over 20 shows both in Canada and the United States. I still compete, but only 1 or 2 shows a year.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I love the euphoric feeling, the commitment, the dedication, the self-respect it gives me. I've become a great role model to my 18 year old daughter and an inspiration to other women 40+. I think it's the fountain of youth and the best anti-aging method out there! The stronger I am, the better if feel. Lifting is a major mood enhancer for me.
What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?
Family history, other female competitors who balance family, work, and responsibilities motivate me. My daughter motivates me and I motivate her. I am able to inspire and motivate women 45+ who have almost given up on improving their physique due to constraints in life. It's never too late to get fit or complete is my motto.
What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?
Recognizing that at my age I could be in the best shape of my life and still compete.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
As a Fitness Manager and Personal Trainer I have an image to uphold to my current and future clients. I'm planning to compete in two shows in 2012.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Stay on course! It is always a working progress. Don't over stress; make every work out and every day count. Every work out brings you one step closer to your goals. No excuses - get to the gym, make it a priority.
