How Did You Get Started?
I was skinny at 145 lbs. I started
lifting with a friend in his garage, and years later accompanied a
training partner to a contest. I thought, "I think I could do
that," and the rest is history.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
When I started I'd lift 6-7 days per week, and even did two-a-days for a few contests. Now in
my late thirties, four days a week works best for me since I feel I
need more recovery. Presently I do a four day split of: Legs,
Chest & Triceps, Back, and Shoulders & Biceps. I use a moderate
volume approach with varied rep schemes, going as high as thirty
reps for leg extensions all the way down to singles and doubles for
deadlifts.
When it comes to exercise choice I believe that the
more difficult the exercise feels the more it should be included in
your repertoire. I center my training around heavy free weight
movements, and always try to hit the body part from several
different angles. Pre-contest I do 60 minutes of cardio every
morning before breakfast (incline treadmill), and this year off-
season I've continued with 30 minutes five days per week.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
For years I ate almost no fats in my diet and my hormone levels suffered
consequently. Last year I made a point of eating good fats with
every meal, and had my best gains in years, as well as improved
hormone levels proven with blood testing. Pre-contest dieting is
approximately 350 grams of protein, 100 grams of carbs (with some
cycling), and about 70 grams of non-saturated fats from almonds,
flaxseed oil and peanut oil. This year's off-season diet I'm
shooting for at least 4000 clean calories per day, with 350 grams
of protein, 400-500 grams of carbs, and around 100 grams of fat.

I rely heavily
on whey isolate mainly for convenience, usually having five shakes
out of my seven meals per day. I've also added Waxy Maize to my
post-workout shakes, and always include Glutamine, BCAA's, and
Creatine after cardio or lifting. I recently signed with Applied
Nutriceuticals, and have been using their complete line, including
RPM, IGF-2, Neovar, Lipotrophin-AM, Lipotrophin-PM, and Osteobolin-C. So far my results have been great, as I've achieved my all-time
bests on several lifts. I'm also looking forward to giving "Drive"
a try, as it will be available in a few weeks.
Why Do You Love Bodybuilding?
I love bodybuilding for several
reasons. First, I'm a physical therapist so I appreciate the
anatomy and kinesiology of training. Athletically, it's one of
only a few sports that you can participate in throughout your
lifetime, and I have no plans of ever stopping! Most importantly,
I love the discipline required to compete. Not everyone has the
ability to focus 100% effort into diet, training, cardio, and
presentation required to excel in this sport, and every contest
provides a new challenge and goal.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
I had my best year to
date this year, winning four out of five shows, and believing that
the fifth was within my reach as well. Next year I plan on
competing again in the NPC Team Universe, as well as the NPC
Masters Nationals (I'll be 40!), and possibly the IFBB North
Americans or NPC Junior Nationals depending upon where they fall on
the calendar. My goal has always been to win the Team Universe, so
I still have some unfinished business to attend to!
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Don't just say
you're going to compete - do it! Nothing will provide greater
motivation in your bodybuilding training than having a contest on
the horizon. Also, stay natural. I have nothing against people
who choose to use drugs in their lives as it's purely a personal
choice. I do believe that training and competing naturally will
give you a greater sense of satisfaction and accomplishment in the
long run.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
In the IFBB I like Victor Martinez and Jay Cutler. There are so many great physiques
competing on the Olympia stage, and I'm a fan of most of them. On
the amateur side, Jose Raymond has always been inspirational to me
as a true competitor. This year I'm keeping several guys in my
cross-hairs for next year's Team Universe, and at the top of the
list is Kiyoshi Moody. Kiyoshi, if you read this - I hope you
bring it next year, because I know I will!
